The former jailhouse in Mladá Boleslav was the town’s greatest “film star”. Unfortunately, the old building was demolished during summer 2022 to make space for a modern block of flats. It stood near the district court in the Republic Square. The jailhouse building, which served its original purpose between 1928 and 1955, was a labyrinth of corridors with gloomy cells in their original appearance. As the courtyard and the fencing were also in the original condition, film crews often only needed to “decorate” the premises with various signs or props to create the required atmosphere.
Many Czech projects were implemented in the Mladá Boleslav jailhouse (such as I Served the King of England, Lidice, Kajínek, Crime in Polná, Case of the First Department, Dark Angels, Bohéma…). However, this location also attracted foreign filmmakers with its unique genius loci (Hitler: The Rise of Evil, Alone in Death, Aftermath…). Even Tom Cruise has been seen here as certain scenes in the famous Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol were shot here.
The streets of Mladá Boleslav also appeared in the James Bond film Casino Royal starring Daniel Craig. The American filmmakers chose Palackého and Husova streets with the buildings of the municipal theatre, today’s Komerční banka, both grammar schools and Sokol gymnasium for shooting some of the scenes.
The building of the Secondary Industrial School by the architect Jiří Kroha, which is currently a national cultural monument, came to life in the Czech Century cycle, where it appeared as army barracks.
Even the electrical substation in Jičínská street, where certain scenes for the Primary School film by Jan Svěrák were shot, has also had its 15 minutes of fame in the film industry.
Other film locations in Mladá Boleslav and its surroundings include Jičínská street (Ferat Vampire), the Old Town Square (Hospital on the Outskirts Twenty Years Later, Stroke the Cat’s Ears), Kosmonosy (Holy Four) and Podlázky (House in the Periphery).
